Nurse's Note

Welcome back, Braves!

I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer. As we begin another exciting school year, I want to take a moment to welcome both our returning families and those who are joining Three Way ISD for the first time. I am looking forward to partnering with you to help keep our students healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

As we prepare for the school year, I will be reaching out to families of students with health conditions such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, seizure disorders, and other medical needs that may require medications, emergency care plans, or physician orders at school. If your child has a health condition that requires an Action Plan, Emergency Care Plan, medication, or special accommodations, please submit the necessary paperwork as soon as possible. Early communication helps ensure we have everything in place to support your child from the very first day of school.

Please also remember to:
  • Update emergency contact information with the school.
  • Notify the nurse's office of any new diagnoses, medications, or health concerns.
  • Ensure required medications and physician orders are provided before they are needed at school.
  • Reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your child's health needs.

At Three Way ISD, we believe healthy students are successful students. Thank you for allowing us to partner with you in caring for your children. I look forward to serving our students, staff, and families throughout the year.

Here's to a safe, healthy, and successful school year! ❤️🖤

SHAC

We invite parents, guardians, and community members to be part of our School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) this school year. SHAC is a group that works together to support the health, safety, and well-being of our students. Members provide input on topics such as physical health, mental wellness, nutrition, school safety, and health education programs.

Your voice and perspective are valuable! By joining SHAC, you can help shape programs and initiatives that promote healthy, successful students and strengthen the connection between our schools and community. Whether you are a parent, healthcare professional, business leader, or community member, we welcome your participation.

SHAC meets just four times each school year, making it an easy and meaningful way to get involved. Members may attend meetings in person or via Zoom, providing flexibility for busy schedules.

If you are interested in serving on SHAC or would like to learn more, please join us at our first meeting of the school year. We look forward to working together to support the health and success of all students.

August Health Highlights

August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
Healthy vision plays an important role in a child's learning, development, and success in school. August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, a great time for families to focus on protecting their children's eyesight and establishing healthy habits.

Tips for Healthy Eyes:
  • Schedule regular vision screenings and comprehensive eye exams as recommended by your child's healthcare provider.
  • Encourage outdoor play and physical activity, which may help support healthy vision development.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen time: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Serve foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, such as carrots, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and citrus fruits.
  • Make sure children wear prescribed glasses or contact lenses as directed.

Tips for Eye Safety:
  • Wear protective eyewear during sports and recreational activities when appropriate.
  • Keep household chemicals, cleaning supplies, and sharp objects out of children's reach.
  • Supervise children when using tools, toys, or equipment that could cause eye injuries.
  • Teach children never to point or throw objects at another person's face.
If an eye injury occurs, knowing what to do can help prevent further damage. Visit the following resource for eye injury first-aid information: First Aid for Eye Injuries

Taking simple steps to protect eye health today can help children see clearly and succeed throughout the school year.

August is national immunization awareness month
August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to recognize the important role vaccines play in protecting children, families, and our community from serious diseases such as measles, whooping cough, meningitis, and other illnesses. Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent illness and help keep students healthy and ready to learn.

Texas schools follow state immunization requirements to help reduce the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and create a healthier learning environment for all students. Families can review current school immunization requirements and recommendations through the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

If you have questions about your child's vaccine needs, we encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider. They can review your child's immunization history and recommend any vaccines that may be due.
